Carthage in the persecution of Decius, a Greek girl who carves idols for a living, and the Christians of the city. Newman wrote it after his conversion to answer a Protestant novel about the early church; it is far better than that origin suggests. This edition is bound with a gallery of 54 plates of cattle and horse painting, among them works by William Henry Davis, James Ward and Bruno Liljefors.
