County Cork, 1846: the potato has failed, the roads are full of people walking to nowhere, and a family of the Protestant gentry is entangled in a question of legitimacy and an inheritance. Trollope worked for the Post Office in Ireland for eighteen years and was there through the Famine; this novel puts a conventional love plot in front of the thing he had actually seen, and the Famine chapters are the reason to read it.
