Es handelt von dem inneren psychologischen Kampf seiner Hauptfigur, Yakov Petrovich Goljadkin, der immer wieder auf jemanden trifft, der seinem Aussehen nach genau sein Doppelgänger ist, aber selbstbewusst, aggressiv und extrovertiert, Eigenschaften, die denen des todenden "Pushover"-Protagonisten genau entgegengesetzt sind .
