When children's entertainer Kari Ferguson is found dead beneath a banquet table in Thaulow Hollow, the Dionysia Theatre's summer production suddenly has a murder scene no director could have planned.

Private investigator Olivia Henriksen has promised Torstein she will keep well away from his police case. Conveniently, she has a different commission: wealthy businessman Aaron Antonsen wants proof that his wife, Kristine, is having an affair. Less conveniently, Kristine's suspicious movements lead Olivia straight back to the theatre.

Soon Olivia is juggling surveillance, golf buggies, alternative healers, amateur actors, and Mona's unexpected debut as make-up artist, all while trying not to interfere with an official murder investigation. But when poisonous secrets begin to surface among Tønsberg's theatrical set, it becomes clear that Kari Ferguson had made enemies far beyond the stage.
