"La bien amada" cuenta la historia de Jocelyn Pierston, nacido en la isla inglesa de Horeston. Pierston trabaja como escultor, y ante todo, es un romántico empedernido que cree fervientemente que se convertirá en un artista conocido por toda Inglaterra y encontrará a su Bien Amada, es decir, el amor de su vida, la mujer de sus sueños.

Con una narración y escritura exquisita, propia de un genio de la escritura como Thomas Hardy, la historia nos muestra como la persecución de la Bien Amada se convertirá en un infierno más que en un sueño. A lo largo de más de cuarenta años que abarca la novela, y centrándose en la relación con tres generaciones de mujeres de una misma familia, la Bien Amada va cambiando de cuerpo y de mujer, y Pierson se da cuenta que es esclavo de una maldición que no le permite encontrar aquello que sigue persiguiendo a ciegas.

Con esta obra, y con la delicadeza y profundidad que le caracteriza, Thomas Hardy explora la imposibilidad de eludir nuestro destino, así como las limitaciones del ser humano.

Thomas Hardy fue un novelista y poeta británico. Hardy escribió en un estilo realista en la tradición de George Eliot, pero también fue influenciado por el romanticismo, especialmente por las obras de William Wordsworth. Ganó fama como autor de novelas como "Lejos del mundanal ruido" (1874), "Tess, la de los d’Urberville" (1891) y "Jude el oscuro" (1895).
