Poirot es convocado por Lord Alloway, del Ministerio de Defensa, porque han robado los planos de un nuevo submarino de guerra. La principal sospechosa es la señora Conrad, que podría ser una espía extranjera. Durante la noche alguien se acerca a Poirot y ofrece devolver los planos a cambio de que no se haga publicidad sobre el asunto. El detective belga pronto descubrirá que nada es lo que parece.
