William Hazlitt admiraba a Shakespeare. Lo consideraba el menos y el más moral de los poetas y conocer a sus personajes era un modo de mantener el contacto directo con la naturaleza humana. Volver a los viejos libros reafirmaba, para Hazlitt, su amistad con los "huéspedes ideales" de la imaginación. Su obra es el comentario que mejor dramatiza aún la experiencia de leer a Shakespeare.
