Complete and unabridged, with 24 full-page plates by Caspar David Friedrich, Odilon Redon and Johan Christian Dahl. An American explorer reaches the North Pole, finds it open, and sails into a hollow earth lit by an interior sun, where a nation worships a living goddess and flies on mechanical wings. Bradshaw published it in 1892, at the height of the hollow-earth vogue, with illustrations that show the machinery. The invention is prodigal and the theology of Atvatabar is worked out with more care than the plot.
