A Swiss pastor, his wife and four sons are wrecked on an island supplied with every useful animal and plant in the world regardless of geography, and set about improving it. Wyss wrote it to teach his own sons husbandry and self-reliance; his son edited it and the zoology has bothered naturalists ever since.
