Roosevelt at fifty-five descends an unmapped Amazon tributary with Candido Rondon, loses a man to the rapids and another to murder, and nearly dies of infection and fever. The river is now named after him; he never fully recovered. This edition adds 50 plates of paintings by Frederic Edwin Church, Albert Bierstadt and J. M. W. Turner, and includes three appendices.
