Old Bugs est une nouvelle écrite peu avant juillet 1919, publiée pour la première fois dans le livre The Shuttered Room and Other Pieces (1959) de la maison Arkham. Avec le début de la Prohibition, la salle de billard Sheehan à Chicago est devenue un repaire sordide pour les buveurs invétérés. Un certain Old Bugs, un homme mûr corrodé par les vices mais capable de faire preuve, à de longs intervalles, de la sensibilité typique des gens éduqués, travaille comme nettoyeur de cuisine. Lorsque le jeune Alfred Trever, initié par son ami Pete Schultz sur le chemin de la boisson, arrive à la taverne de Sheehan, Old Bugs va tenter de le convaincre de ne pas faire la même erreur que lui.
