La novela cuenta las peripecias y desventuras de un muchacho llamado Oliver Twist. Su nacimiento en un hospicio, donde queda huérfano y pasa su infancia sometido al hambre, el frío y los continuos maltratos. Su posterior huida a Londres donde su suerte no mejora y de pronto se encuentra en compañía de ladrones y otras gentes de mala calaña. Después de varias aventuras tendrá la suerte de caer en manos de unas personas honradas que lo ayudarán a encontrar noticias de sus orígenes, de sus padres e incluso a descubrir las infames tretas que su hermanastro estaba tramando en su contra. Finalmente arreglado todo el entuerto y ajusticiados los culpables Oliver pasará a gozar de su herencia y a vivir en compañía de aquellos que le ayudaron a enderezar su destino.
