"Under the Red Crescent: Adventures of an English Surgeon with the Turkish Army at Plevna and Erzeroum 1877-1878" by John Sandes gives an interesting insight into the Turkish army from the perspective of western-European society. Told from the perspective of an English man, the commentary of what was seen and experienced may not be an authentic recounting of the Turkish culture, but it does provide an authentic look at what it was like to experience it as a foreigner.
