Carnacki tells his friends over dinner what he found in the haunted houses he investigates: a whistling room in Ireland, a horse that is not a horse, a chapel with a dagger that moves. Hodgson had been to sea and set up a school of physical culture before he wrote; he was killed at Ypres in 1918. The detective carries a camera and an electric pentacle, and half the hauntings turn out to be fraud.
