Poirot y Hastings salen de vacaciones. En el autobús conocen a Mary Durrant, quien trabaja con su tía en una tienda de antigüedades, y viaja a Charlock Bay llevando un valioso set de miniaturas que venderá a un coleccionista americano. Todos se alojan en el hotel Anchor. Cuando Mary abre su maletín descubre que ha sido forzado y las miniaturas ya no están. Desesperada, le pide ayuda a Poirot. Lo primero que hace el detective es telefonear al comprador, el señor Wood, quien asegura que media hora antes alguien en nombre de Elizabeth Penn, la tía de Mary Durrant, le ha vendido las famosas miniaturas por 500 libras. ¿Podrá Poirot descubrir la verdad?
