A trading post on Hudson Bay, a company that wants the land, a young engineer, and a girl who is the last of a family the post has forgotten it wronged. Curwood was expelled from school, sold his first story at sixteen, and was paid by the Canadian government to travel the far north; the fort, the canoes and the Cree here are from his own notebooks.
