Ten years on at Plumfield: the school has become a college, the boys of the earlier books are grown, and Alcott takes each of them as far as she is willing to. She wrote it ill and unwilling, hounded by readers for a fourth March book, and finished it two years before she died. The last chapter says plainly that she is closing the story down so that nobody can ask her for more.
