Born in Newgate, married five times, transported to Virginia and rich at last by means she sets out with no apology, Moll tells her own life at seventy and repents in the final pages. Defoe published it anonymously as a true account edited from the woman's own papers, and it was read that way for a century. The bookkeeping is the point: every marriage, theft and passage is priced, and the moral arrives exactly when the balance is safe.
