A young minister arrives at Thrums to a congregation that watches everything he does, and meets a gypsy girl in the woods on the worst possible night of the year. Barrie was writing his own Kirriemuir under another name, and his mother's stories are the foundation of the whole of it. He later turned the book into a play, one of the great stage successes of the 1890s.
