Byens mest eftertragtede ungkarl forelsker sig i hende, og det lykkes ham lige så stille at lirke hendes ulykkelige livshistorie ud af hende; en historie om en dybt alkoholiseret og moralsk fordærvet ægtemand, hvis ondskabsfulde og nedværdigende opførsel til sidst drev hende og sønnen på flugt.

Den engelske forfatter Anne Brontë (1820-1849) var den yngste af de tre Brontë-søstre, hvis romaner har gjort så stort et indtryk på læsere verden over. Anne Brontë voksede op i Yorkshire og arbejdede i en årrække som guvernante, hvilket har været til stor inspiration for hendes roman "Agnes Grey".
