A hen and a girl are washed ashore in the land of Ev, where a royal family has been sold to the Nome King and turned into ornaments. Dorothy, Ozma and an army of twenty-six officers and one private go underground to guess which ornament is which. Baum wrote the third Oz book in 1907 after readers refused to let the series stop, and gave it the best villain of the fourteen. Its 99 original illustrations have been carefully restored and coloured for this edition.
