Tarzan of the Apes (1912) is the first novel in Edgar Rice Burroughs's famous Tarzan series. It tells the story of John Clayton, the infant son of English aristocrats who are marooned on the coast of Africa after a mutiny. When his parents die, the baby is discovered and adopted by Kala, a kind-hearted female ape, who raises him as her own within the tribe of the great apes.
