The war comes to East Africa, Tarzan finds his estate burned and his wife apparently dead, and he goes into the German lines with nothing left to lose. Burroughs wrote it in 1919, and the fury of the middle chapters is wartime fury. Then the ape-man walks into a desert valley where a lost people worship lions, and the book turns back into a Burroughs adventure.
