An Englishman inherits an estate in the Land of the Blue Mountains, on the Adriatic, and a woman in a shroud comes to his window at night, wet from the sea, and will not enter uninvited. Stoker spent twenty-seven years as business manager to Henry Irving, running the Lyceum; this 1909 novel is the one he wrote after Dracula, and the explanation he provides for the lady is not the one the reader is enjoying.
