A clear signal means one thing. A broken signal means another. Three calls. Then silence. That is how you know when to stop listening.
Until a frequency that should be dead answers back.
Across a vast high-desert basin, old radio towers and impossible scientific structures rise from red earth and dust. Most have been silent longer than anyone can remember.
Now one of them is transmitting.
A signal listener knows the difference between noise and repetition. Between coincidence and pattern. Between something heard once and something that answers. At least, that is what everyone has always believed.
Following the signal means crossing open desert, surviving brutal exposure, dust, distance, failing equipment, and ruins beginning to wake around them.
And somewhere beyond the static, Machine-linked systems appear to be responding.
But a real signal is not necessarily a message. A repeated answer is not proof somebody meant it for you.
And the closer they get to the source, the more dangerous one question becomes:
Who - or what - is listening to whom?
