A mining engineer is sealed in a shaft by radioactive gas, sleeps five centuries, and wakes in an America occupied by an Asian empire and defended by gangs with anti-gravity belts. This is the novella in which Anthony Rogers first appears; the newspaper strip renamed him Buck, and the whole idea of the space hero on a comics page starts here. Fifty-eight plates of moonlit streets and squares, from Utagawa Kunisada II to Carl Gustav Carus, carry the story's long sleep into the cities of the waking world.
