Fyodor Dostoyevsky: The Essays : Winter Notes on Summer Impressions; Letters & Reminisances; Virginia Woolf's Essays on Dostoyevsky

"He lived in a state of perpetual inner struggle; peace was unknown to him."

This unabridged collection of essays by and about Fyodor Dostoyevsky includes recordings of the author's letters and his accounts of his travels across Europe, as well as three short essays on his life and work by Virginia Woolf.

Letters & Reminiscences:

Published in 1923, this remarkable collection offers insight into the author's personal and professional lives, and includes Letter from the Depths from 1840, in which he writes about his own experiences with imprisonment and the death sentence he received as a result of his involvement in a revolutionary group (which was later commuted); correspondence from European exile discussing The Idiot and The Devils, his wife's memoirs of their struggles, the Pushkin celebration letters, and philosophical exchanges about The Brothers Karamazov. Together, they reveal Dostoevsky's creative process, spiritual struggles, and unwavering faith amid poverty, illness, and persecution.

Winter Notes on Summer Impressions:

Written in 1862, this is a mixture of travelogue and sharply observed social commentary in which the author critiques Western civilisation through a uniquely Russian lens, using his impressions of France, England, Germany and other countries to reflect on the differences between Western society and Russia. In doing so, he reveals a lot about his own philosophical and political views.

Three Essays on Dostoyevsky by Virginia Woolf:

Dostoyevsky's emotional intensity, interiority, and willingness to break form influenced Woolf's modernist style and she was a great champion of his work. In these essays—Dostoyevsky the Father, More Dostoyevsky, and Dostoyevsky in Cranford—she examines how biographical portrayals shape our understanding of him.

Fyodor Dostoyevsky was a Russian novelist, journalist, and short-story writer renowned for his profound explorations of psychology, morality, and the human condition. Born in Moscow, his tumultuous life was marked by early literary success and followed by arrest and exile due to his radical political activities. He is widely regarded as one of the world's finest novelists, penning classics that include Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, Demons, and The Brothers Karamazov. His work has had an immense influence on 20th-century fiction and his ideas have profoundly shaped literary modernism, existentialism, and various schools of psychology, theology, and literary criticism.
