This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.

Four sisters, one small house, and a war happening somewhere far away. Meg is the beauty who remembers being poor. Jo is the writer who cannot stop arguing with her own temper. Beth is too shy to be noticed and too good to be forgotten. Amy is the youngest, and she wants the world to look at her.

Their father is away with the Union army. Their mother keeps the house going on almost nothing. And the year unfolds the way real years do: a Christmas without presents that turns into the best Christmas anyway, a burnt pudding, a borrowed silk dress, a piano nobody can play, a hair-cut sold for a dollar, a skating party on a river that may not hold. Louisa May Alcott wrote Little Women in 1868 from her own family's life, and it still reads less like a novel than like being let into a room.

It is also sharper than its reputation. Jo refuses a proposal because she does not want to be "a woman with a will of her own" turned into someone's ornament. Meg chooses love over money and then has to live with the bills. And Beth's illness arrives without any of the consolation the genre usually supplies. Alcott gave her readers something rare for the time: girls who work, want, fail, quarrel, forgive and grow up.

Published in two parts and never out of print since, Little Women is one of the most read and most listened-to novels in the English language, and the model for almost every story about a family that came after it. This is the complete, unabridged text: all forty-seven chapters, from "Playing Pilgrims" to "Harvest Time."
