The Duke of Omnium is left a widower with three grown children; his heir wants to marry an American girl and his daughter a penniless younger son, and he has to decide what a duke's authority is worth. Trollope closed the Palliser series with it in 1880, and let the old politician lose every argument he most wants to win. It is the gentlest book of the six and the saddest.
