Originally entitled The Saddest Story, this is a heartbreaking, yet darkly witty, tale of betrayal and conflict in the years before World War I. Through a series of flashbacks, the seemingly meek John Dowell tells the story of two failing marriages. But all is not as it seems and the twists and turns of Ford's masterpiece raise as many questions as they answer.
