HE EAGERLY AWAITED NEW THRILLER FROM THE AUTHOR OF A SIMPLE PLAN
Eerie, terrifying, and unputdownable, The Ruins is Scott Smith's first novel since his acclaimed debut A Simple Plan earned rave reviews and stormed bestseller lists.
The Ruins follows two American couples enjoying a pleasant, lazy beach holiday together in Mexico. On an impulse, they go off with newfound friends in search of one of their group -- the young German, who, in pursuit of a girl, has headed for the remote Mayan ruins, site of a fabled archeological dig.
This is what happens from the moment the searchers -- moving into the wild interior -- begin to suspect that there is an insidious, horrific "other" among them....

Look, this had great potential to become a four-star book. I liked the setting, the restricted area in which the book was set, and the focus on detailed descriptions.But... BUT. The men are intelligent (until the plot requires them to be otherwise, of course). They think about possible solutions, do useful things and try to save everyone. The women, on the other hand, are stupid, whiny, careless, and constantly complain. They even jerk off their boyfriend in a life-or-death situation because "she needed that". That's the reason behind every stupid action the women take.'I didn't think', 'I wanted it in the moment', and so on. The author doesn't even attempt to develop them as characters. Sometimes they need new clothes and can only find a short skirt and a tank top in the abandoned campsite, both of which are too small for them (even though they are petite themselves). I found this so annoying that, by the end, I lost interest in the plot and felt that it just dragged on, which made me take off another star.
