Montague Egg is a fictional amateur detective from the pen of Dorothy L. Sayers, English crime writer from the Golden Age of Detective Fiction. Egg is a travelling salesman for an importer and distributor of fine wines and spirits who occasionally links a casual observation with a recent newspaper headline proclaiming some crime or witnesses the discovery of a murdered body. The plots of these mysteries are typically neat puzzles and Egg conveniently uses his sophisticated knowledge of some fine trades he picked up during his unconventional career.
