Jane Helier relata su caso en el "club de los martes". Un joven autor le envía una obra de teatro para su consideración, poco tiempo después, el escritor recibe una carta firmada por la actriz citándolo a verla personalmente en un hotel. Acude al lugar, pero quien lo recibe no es la actriz sino una impostora. A partir de este incidente desaparecen unas valiosas joyas. Los miembros del club, y especialmente Miss Marple, deberán utilizar todas sus células grises para resolver lo que en realidad ocurrió.
