With his meditative, sometimes mystical piano cycles "Gymnopédies" and "Gnossiennes" (1889/90), Satie influenced Ravel and Debussy. The pieces are deliberately short and light, have simple forms and a partly humorous character (such as, for example, the Bureaucratic Sonatina drawing on Clementi).
