Franz Kafka (1883 – 1924) blev født i Prag og døde i Wien, en del af det tysk-jødiske mindretal i Prag. Han var tysksproget forfatter og uddannet jurist. Efter jurastudiet blev han i 1908 ansat i et forsikringsselskab i Prag.
I 1917 fik han konstateret tuberkulose, og siden tilbragte han længere perioder på sanatorier.
Franz Kafka debuterede i 1913 med fortællingen Dommen. Senere udgav Franz Kafka bl.a. Forvandlingen i 1915. Kun en lille del af forfatterskabet udkom i hans levetid. Vennen Max Brod udgav posthumt de tre store ufuldendte romaner Processen (1925, da. 1945), Slottet (1926, da. 1949) og Amerika (1927, da. 1964).
Den verden, som skildres i Franz Kafkas forfatterskab er funderet på uigennemskueligt bureaukrati, der gør hele tilværelsen meningsløs og absurd, og det er netop dette, som man siden kom til at kalde kafkask. Det kafkaske går igen i sproget, som også er gennemsyret af denne absurditet; det er skrevet i en kancellilignende stil og er fuldt af klicheer og fortærskede faste vendinger.
