A poor girl becomes the mistress of two men in succession because her family needs the money, and loses the first to a sudden death and the second to his family's demand for respectability. Dreiser's publisher cut and softened it heavily; even so the reviewers called it sordid. This edition binds 58 plates of painting with the text, among them works by Edvard Munch, Robert Henri and John Frederick Kensett, and restores and colours its single in-text illustration.
