Carter recorre regiones olvidadas por el tiempo, viaja en barco con gatos parlantes, cruza desiertos congelados y se enfrenta a criaturas temibles como los night-gaunts y los ghouls, algunos de los cuales se convertirán en aliados inesperados. También desciende a ciudades subterráneas, se encuentra con antiguos dioses y atraviesa mundos donde la geometría misma desafía la comprensión humana.

En su viaje, Carter busca no solo una ciudad, sino una respuesta más profunda sobre el deseo, la memoria y la naturaleza de la divinidad.
