Le livre est une nouvelle inachevée de l' écrivain américain de fiction d'horreur HP Lovecraft , qui aurait été écrite à la fin de 1933. Elle a été publiée pour la première fois dans la revue Leaves en 1938, après la mort de Lovecraft. Dans le fragment d'histoire, le narrateur reçoit un livre ancien d'un étrange libraire, et lorsqu'il le ramène chez lui et l'examine, des événements étranges et sinistres s'ensuivent.
