Omalaatuinen lordi Edgware murhataan kirjastossaan. Syylliseksi epäillään hänen vaimoaan, kuuluisaa näyttelijätärtä Jane Wilkinsonia, joka ei suinkaan ollut salannut haluaan päästä eroon miehestään. Vain hetkeä aikaisemmin Jane oli pyytänyt itseään Hercule Poirotia puhumaan tässä asiassa puolestaan.
