A raiding party from the surface is captured by pirates in the world inside the earth, and Tanar of Pellucidar is carried off to an island where the sun never sets and nobody has learned to be afraid of the dark. Burroughs returned to Pellucidar in 1929 after fourteen years and had David Innes tell the story by radio through the earth's crust. The Korsars are Barbary pirates who fell through a hole in the world. Sixty moonlit plates by painters including Johan Christian Dahl and Vilhelm Arnesen carry the dark of the surface down into Pellucidar's sunless reaches.
