What happens when a genuinely good man enters a world that has forgotten what goodness looks like? That is the question at the heart of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Idiot — and it is the reason this novel still feels dangerous, unsettling, and surprisingly modern more than a century after it was written. Prince Lev Myshkin returns to Russia after years of medical treatment abroad. He is honest. Compassionate. Unusually sincere. He does not play social games, manipulate people, chase status, or hide behind clever appearances. And that is exactly what makes him so disruptive. In a society built on pride, money, jealousy, ambition, and desire, simple decency can look like stupidity. Myshkin quickly becomes entangled with people whose lives are anything but simple. At the center of the conflict is the beautiful and deeply wounded Nastasya Filippovna, a woman trapped between shame, pride, self-destruction, and the desperate hope that someone might truly see her. Then there is Rogozhin, consumed by a love so intense that it begins to resemble possession, obsession, and violence. Around them moves a world of fortunes, marriages, reputations, rivalries, insults, secrets, and emotional explosions. But The Idiot is far more than a dramatic story of love and jealousy. Dostoevsky uses these characters to ask uncomfortable questions. Can kindness survive in a cynical world? Can compassion save another person — or can the desire to save someone become dangerous in itself? Is intelligence really wisdom? Is social respectability the same thing as morality? And what happens when a person refuses to behave according to the rules everyone else has silently accepted? Dostoevsky knew something about extreme human experience.
