St Louis in 1803, when the Louisiana Purchase ran three flags over the town in two days, and a girl of the old French families caught between two of them. Mary Dillon worked from local records and the detail of the transfer is right. This edition is bound with a gallery of 57 plates, among them paintings by Edvard Munch, George Catlin and Emilio Sánchez-Perrier, and its three in-text illustrations are restored and coloured.
