Universally one of the top 5 fears, this traumatic experience of visiting the dentist has haunted us since we were children. Not knowing what is happening, hearing sounds like drills and suctions, puts us in a sensory dis-advantage. When we experience this, our mind races and we prepare for the worst. However, looking back, how many bad experiences did you actually have at the dentist? If you can't give me a number in a few seconds, it means very few, or maybe none! Did you know that in the medical field, dentists have the highest rate of suicides? The experience of everyone you see being afraid and tense of you would make anyone depressed after a while. So the more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your dentist is, thereby making the experience more comfortable for the both of you. Removing the mind's ability to race, and just calming it down, will also slow your heart rate, causing less adrenaline and saliva, making it easier for the dentist to do their job and get you out quickly! Focusing on the positive outcome rather than the negative possibility will help you achieve this. Sanjay Burman is a Master Hypnotherapist.
