Guy de Maupassant (Dieppe, Francia, 1850 – París, 1893) fue discípulo de Gustave Flaubert y coetáneo de Émile Zola, y escribió más de trescientos cuentos y relatos. La publicación de Bola de sebo (1880) le mereció el reconocimiento en el mundo literario. Entre sus temas más tratados se encuentran la Normadía rural, la pequeña burguesía, la mediocridad del funcionariado, la guerra franco-prusiana, las aventuras amorosas y las alucinaciones propias (como en La casa Tellier o Los cuentos de la becada). Destacó especialmente en el género del terror, llegándose a equiparar con un maestro como Edgar Allan Poe. En estos relatos es notable la obsesión del autor por la muerte y lo sobrenatural (¿Quién sabe?, La noche o El Horla). También es autor de cinco novelas. Pasó sus últimos años aquejado de los problemas psicológicos, que ya lo habían acompañado a lo largo de su vida, y fue ingresado en un manicomio, con graves síntomas de demencia.
