Sigmund Freud nació en Freiberg en 1856 y recibió una educación judía no tradicionalista, abierta a la filosofía del Iluminismo. Concluyo sus estudios de Medicina en 1882.. Junto a Joseph Breuer, Freud abandonó progresivamente el método de la hipnosis y pasó al de la catarsis –primero– y al de la asociación libre, fundamento del psicoanálisis, después. La obra de Freud se divide generalmente en dos períodos caracterizados por diferentes tópicas del aparato psíquico. La primera abarca el período que va de1900 a 1920 y distingue inconsciente, preconsciente y consciente. En la segunda –de 1920 hasta su muerte– hace intervenir las instancias del ello, el yo y el superyó.Después de una vida de trabajo materializada en veintitrés tomos (sus Obras completas), Sigmund Freud falleció en Inglaterra el 23 de septiembre de 1939, un año después de dejar Viena, ciudad en la que los nazis quemaron sus libros y los de otros intelectuales judíos, también perseguidos por el fascismo.
