Rudyard Kipling nació en Bombay, India, pero sus padres lo trasladaron a Londres a estudiar, por lo que durante unos cuantos años vivió separado de ellos. Según su familia, Kipling gozaba leyendo en voz alta sus propias historias y él mismo se reía a carcajadas de sus bromas. También se le nombró Caballero de la Orden del Imperio Británico en tres ocasiones, honores que rechazó, y en 1907 fue el ganador del Premio Nobel de Literatura más joven hasta la fecha.
