A black medical student passing as white travels to Ethiopia and finds a hidden kingdom and his own ancestry. Pauline Hopkins serialised it in the Colored American Magazine in 1902–03, and the book was lost for most of a century. This edition includes 59 plates of paintings by Winslow Homer, William Langson Lathrop, John Noble Barlow and James Jebusa Shannon, dating from 1841 to 1909.
