Why would I ever want Tyrone out of my life?

Although he’d never officially adopted me, he had been the only father-figure I’d ever known.

He married Mom when I was just two years old, so he had in fact helped raise me.

He treated me every bit as much as his own regardless of whose blood ran through my veins.

When I was three, Mom and Tyrone had their own baby, a boy.

I loved my little brother Sly. We seemed to be the perfect family in every respect.

Tyrone was a criminal lawyer but somehow had always found the time to attend our

sporting events, take us camping, and dry our tears when necessary.

But for some reason, when I was fifteen and Sly was twelve, Mom claimed Tyrone was

“stifling” her inner goddess and divorced him. I was devastated, but my stepfather assured

Sly and me he would still be our father.

And he was – Mom certainly didn’t cheat him out of visitation with us.

In fact, as Mom was releasing her “inner goddess” we spent a lot of weekends with Dad.

When I turned nineteen, Tyrone bought me a brand new car as promised, and sent me off to

college paying my tuition as well. Being away from home was a whole new scene for me.

I never really understood the extent of Tyrone’s love for me.

But when I came back for winter break with a boyfriend in tow, I was about to find out.
