Frances H. Burnett (1849, Manchester, Inglaterra - 1924, Plandome, Estados Unidos) perdió a su padre cuando tan solo tenía cinco años. La familia hubo de sobrellevar penurias económicas y en 1865 se trasladó a Estados Unidos. Ocho años más tarde Frances se casó, pero antes ya había conseguido publicar en algunas revistas americanas como Godey’s Lady’s Book, Godey’s, Peterson’s Ladies’ Magazine, Scribner’s Monthly y Harper’s. Contaba 28 años cuando apareció ThatLass O’ Lowrie’s (1877), su primera novela.
