It is the time of the Scottish Jacobite uprising of 1745 which sought to restore the Stuart dynasty in the person of Charles Edward Stuart, known as "Bonnie Prince Charlie". A young English dreamer and soldier, Edward Waverley, is sent to Scotland that year. He journeys north from his aristocratic family home, Waverley-Honour, in the south of England, first to the Scottish Lowlands and the home of family friend Baron Bradwardine, then into the Highlands and the heart of the rebellion and its aftermath.

Arturo Barea (Badajoz, 1897-Faringdon, 1957), escritor autodidacta y periodista, fue uno de los narradores más importantes del exilio gracias a su pasmosa lucidez al abordar los convulsos primeros cuarenta años del siglo xx español. Durante la Guerra Civil trabajó en la Oficina de Censura de Prensa Extranjera de la República, en la sede de Telefónica, en la madrileña calle de Gran Vía, motivo por el cual tuvo que exiliarse en 1938, primero a Francia y después a Inglaterra. Todos sus libros fueron publicados en inglés, traducidos por su mujer Ilsa Barea-Kulcsar (Viena, 1902-Viena, 1973), y, más tarde en castellano, excepto su primera publicación, Valor y miedo (1938), un libro de cuentos. La trilogía autobiográfica La forja de un rebelde es un testimonio ineludible sobre su infancia, su participación en la guerra del Rif y la Guerra Civil, y ha sido reconocida universalmente por su valor literario y documental.Barea también se hizo famoso entre los oyentes de la BBC por las ochocientas cincuenta y seis charlas (una cada semana) que dio para el servicio para América Latina de la cadena británica. Con la publicación por primera vez en español de estos dos textos, toda su obra está ahora editada, por fin, en su idioma y su país maternos. En Espasa también se ha publicado su obra Unamuno.
